Parasitoid foraging decisions mediated by artificial vibrations

چکیده

In any hosteparasitoid interaction, the detection of the host in its microhabitat is a crucial step in the interaction that has a major influence on the parasitoid’s fitness. We used bioassays to investigate whether the parasitoid Sympiesis sericeicornis (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) uses the vibrations of its host Phyllonorycter sp. gr. blancardella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) to detect it in the leaf mine. From the large variety of signals produced by the host, we identified a unitary signal that could be reproduced artificially. We then sent this signal into emptied mines to analyse the reaction of the parasitoid. The wasps reacted by increasing both the time spent foraging on the mine and the number of insertions of the ovipositor to detect the ‘virtual’ host. This study is the first to show that parasitoids detect host vibrations.

A compound produced by fruigivorous Tephritidae (Diptera) larvae promotes oviposition behavior by the biological control agent Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Tephritid fruit fly parasitoids use fruit-derived chemical cues and the vibrations that result from larval movements to locate hosts sequestered inside fruit. However, compounds produced by the larvae themselves have not been previously described nor their significance to parasitoid foraging determined. We collected the volatiles from four species of tropical and subtropical Tephritidae: Anast...

Potential for climate effects on the size-structure of host-parasitoid indirect interaction networks.

Communities of insect herbivores are thought to be structured mainly by indirect processes mediated by shared natural enemies, such as apparent competition. In host-parasitoid interaction networks, overlap in natural enemy communities between any pair of host species depends on the realized niches of parasitoids, which ultimately depend on the foraging decisions of individuals. Optimal foraging...

Matching host reactions to parasitoid wasp vibrations.

The sensory ecology of predator detection by prey has been little studied for any arthropod prey predator system, in contrast to the sensory ecology of prey finding by predators. The aim of this study was to quantify the foraging signals produced by the parasitoid Sympiesis sericeicornis (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and the sensory ecology of enemy detection and the avoidance behaviour of the leaf...

Host Suitability of a Gregarious Parasitoid on Beetle Hosts: Flexibility between Fitness of Adult and Offspring

Behavioral tactics play a crucial role in the evolution of species and are likely to be found in host-parasitoid interactions where host quality may differ between host developmental stages. We investigated foraging decisions, parasitism and related fitness in a gregarious ectoparasitoid, Sclerodermus harmandi in relation to two distinct host developmental stages: larvae and pupae. Two colonies...

Host-Size Mediated Trade-Off in a Parasitoid Sclerodermus harmandi

Optimality models of host-parasitoid relationships have traditionally assumed that host quality increases as a function of host size at parasitism. However, trade-offs may play a crucial role in species evolution and should be found in host-parasitoid interactions where the host quality may differ between different sizes. Here, we investigated the effects of host size differences of Monochamus ...
